On May 25 2009, cyclone Aila wrecked havoc in West Bengal, thousands died. Nearly 2.3 million people were displaced as 450,000 homes were damaged. Some villages were inundated with 20 ft of salt water. Standing crops were destroyed and at least 50,000 hectares of agricultural land was lost. Everything seemed to have perished except the spirit to survive.
