Project WHY
ProjectWHY (www.projectwhy.org) is a non-governmental not-for-profit organization engaged in education support and life-skills enhancement of slum children and their families. It was created in May 1998 and aims at creating an enabling environment to help underprivileged children and youth to access better earning options. ProjectWHY’s classes do not seek to replace mainstream schooling - the provision of educational support is its goal.
Some of ProjectWHY’s programs include:
- Education Centers, teaching more than 800 children in 7 locations throughout New Delhi.
- Special Education, day care centre for 20 special need children and young adults with disabilities
- Heart Fix Hotel, sponsoring heart surgeries for those most in need.
- Women Center, nurturing and supporting disadvantaged local women.
Anand Charity @ Project Why
Anand Charity is pleased to be able to help ProjectWHY. One of our volunteers visited ProjectWHY last year and gave us a positive report of their activities. Anand Charity will assist ProjectWHY in kick starting a new pilot program that is targeted at about 250 children from grades 2 through 5. The pilot program focuses on the quality of the educational support each child receives rather than simply getting children to remain in school and pass their Boards. Anand Charity will assist ProjectWHY with costs for setting up the project, salaries of two full time English teachers, and cost of stationery etc.
The pilot program aims to bring children to ProjectWHY for three hours per day - an increase from the current one hour per day. These sessions would focus on an hour each of support of the school curriculum, English tuition with a special emphasis on the spoken language and comprehension and general knowledge.
The program would benefit the children in the following ways:
- Help the children improve their ability to speak English leading to better job options when they finish their studies.
- Help children become better citizens through the general knowledge component which is designed to enable them to acquire more rounded life skills.
- Help the children build on the educational support that ProjectWHY is already providing so that they can compete with their more privileged counterparts and obtain the sort of exam results that enable them to take up higher education and decent jobs.
Project Monitoring
